First, a little background:
A while back, while I was still in HS (jeez, I talk like it wasn't two months ago...), I came up with an idea to build a boombox out of/into an old unused trumpet case. On all the band trips (competitions and such), my group of friends would load the trucks and sit together in the back of one of the busses. Usually someone brought a boombox and we played music until the driver got pissed at us. Well, I decided back then that I'd give the underclassmen in that group a present- a stealth boombox. Build it so it looks like a trumpet case on the outside, but on the inside, sweet audio goodness. Obviously, the idea never panned out before I graduated, mainly due to lack of knowledge and parts on my part. I went back to visit during 'band camp' (don't even think about it.), and one of my underclass friends reminded me of the idea, and how he wanted to continue it if I wasn't going to. I decided to finish what I'd envisioned, and now I ask Ars for help.
This is what I envisioned then/modified now:
First of all, here is the enclosure. Quick AutoCAD drawing, nothing special. DWG available upon request.
I'm going to build a frame inside there, anchored to the case sidewall, and would like to have three inputs: CD (rip apart an old discman), radio (need help here. Where can I get a drop-in radio?), and line (iPod, MD, etc.)
I would ideally like to build my own amp(s), but I don't know of where I could learn how. A little more on the amps- I am planning to run this thing on RC car batteries, on a trickle-charge circuit. The speakers I'm looking to drive are low-end car stereo speakers (perhaps 50W), at the moment. I'm open to suggestion here as well, since I currently have absolutely nothing but the case and the idea. Also, this is not a Hi-Fi setup. This is a 'let's play music while we're loading trucks/in the back of the noisy bus' setup. Fidelity is not the main concern, but if at all possible, I'd like to keep it around radio quality, if not better.
Is this idea feasible? If so, where might I learn how to build the amp(s)? Will an RC car battery be enough to power this thing? Am I f'ing nuts? (Don't answer that one.)
