Depending on the correct identification of the iBook G3/G4 by vintage build year model,
processor speed, and whether or not you have access to the product serial number...
you may be able to identify device* through a 'lookup by serial number service' online.
To reset a MacOSX account password, ... or a MacOSXInstall disc.
•Five Ways to Reset a Lost Admin Password: (includes methods for recent/all Macs)
• How to reset your Mac OS X password without an installer disc
You cannot use an older system than the one your iBook shipped with; and the last
supported systems for PowerPC Mac hardware vary depending on the CPU specs.
An 800MHz processor in early iBookG4 would be unable to use Leopard 10.5 installer.
Certain late or last models of iBook G4 (12-inch/1.33GHz; 14-inch/1.42GHz) shipped
with a special version Tiger OS X 10.4.2+ in an install-restore software kit. At that point
these could be upgraded to run Leopard 10.5(.8) with retail DVD install disc; this disc
did not include newer versions of the applications included with the Mac computer.
So those were available separately on disc media in retail carton.
*Mac Serial Number Info - Lookup your Apple Serial Number (do not post in thread)
If you have one of the last (mid-2005) iBook G4 models, 12-in/14-in, they could use a
retail Leopard 10.5 DVD to re-set the password when booted from the Installer and if
options were used to only change the password. You may not have to upgrade Tiger
(if that's what is on the device) to reset the password. If you do end up installing 10.5
Leopard, the performance may be degraded if the iBookG4 hasn't enough RAM or if
the hard disk drive is full or small. These rely on Virtual Memory (drive space) to add
performance through use of swap temp memory written/read from storage space.
There's quite a bit you should learn about these vintage-obsolete systems & hardware.
And quite frankly, it would be easier to locate a newer MacBook (2006-2010) or better
MacBook/Pro model; the older ones are relatively inexpensive & depending on choices
they generally have better performance and reliability. (Avoid MB/Pro 15-inch dual GPU
where those had a problem with automatic graphic switching; another topic to read up.)
If the iBook includes a power adapter, and could charge the battery, that would help in
the process of other activities. To reset password may involve starting up in Single-User
mode and using the 'command-line' or 'terminal' access to unix underpinnings of OS X.
So it would not be starting up into an OS X or pre-X Mac system 9.1/9.2 at that point.
Older iBookG3 models started out with 'colors' and were termed 'clamshell' and the later
ones were white polycarbonate G3 then G4 processor series; each has different specs &
any with CPU below 867MHz cannot install Leopard 10.5; or if you could hack/install, the
performance may balk and lag depending on the rest of the configuration (RAM/HDD.)
The PowerBook G3 through G4 was a more robust design, started out small; then later
were metal cased, up to 17-inch display, and they were a pre-MacBook/Pro idea.
Some information for these models (all iBook, etc) available in sites such as everymac.com
lowendmac.com , mactracker.ca (app/application download, free) among others. You may
have a difficult time locating correct install-restore or retail vintage Mac OS X for old 'Book.
Good luck & happy trails! 🙂

The firmware password prevents starting from any internal or external storage device other than the selected boot disk.
To protect data on your Mac, you can set a user account password (password to log in) to prevent other users from unauthorized access to your account. You can also encrypt a boot disk using FileVault so that only users who log on to a Mac can read data from this disk.
For even more reliable protection, you can set the firmware password. Users who do not know the password of the firmware will not be able to start the computer from any disk other than the one designated as the boot disk. Thus, it will be impossible to use some shortcut keys at startup.
If you Forgot your Firmware Password
Bypass Firmware Password on any MacBook or MacBook Air, or iMac it’s a very dangerous and hard procedure. If you cannot remember the firmware password or pass code, reserve a personal meeting with an Apple Store Members or an authorized Apple Service Center. Bring your Mac and your original receipt or invoice as proof of purchase.

Solving the Problem by Yourself
It is extremely important to understand that rolling back the EFI firmware is the MOST dangerous operation that you can do on a Mac. If you confuse the image of EFI firmware and initiate an update with firmware from the wrong generation or, even worse, from a different Mac model, it will not end with anything good, and even in an authorized service center you can hardly be helped. The computer risks to stop turning on altogether, once and forever.
